A Wisconsin judge issued a temporary restraining order Friday blocking publication of Gov. Scott Walker’s controversial new law designed to significantly constrain collective bargaining rights of most public workers in the state.
Dane County Court Judge Maryann Sumi issued the order — which prevents Wisconsin Secretary of State Doug LaFollette from publishing the collective bargaining law until she can rule on the case — in response to a complaint brought by the county district attorney on behalf of several public officials who claim Republicans violated the state’s open-meeting law in pushing the legislation through.
“It seems to me the public policy behind effective enforcement of the open meeting law is so strong that it does outweigh the interest, at least at this time, which may exist in favor of sustaining the validity of the (law),” Sumi said, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Walker signed the bill into law March 11. Publication of the bill, which LaFollette had scheduled for March 25, would give the highly contested legislation full force and effect. Read the rest of the story by clicking here.
